How to be smart and safe while using social media

  1. Think before you post or comment because though it might seem like something is deleted, it is still out there somewhere

  2. Think before you send a message or a picture because sometimes it might seem like it “disappears,” but it is still out there

  3. Think about who you allow to have access to your accounts and make sure you read the privacy terms & conditions for apps

How to decide what is okay to post and whats not

You’re okay if your parents, relatives, and teachers were to see it

(Make sure you really think about WHAT you are posting and WHO will see it)

Everyone will understand the direct meaning of your post

(Makes sure it can’t be taken in an offensive or inappropriate way)

Someone could make your post public using another social media outlet

(Make sure that you would be okay if it got shared somewhere else)

When deciding whether or not to post something do the YES checklist

How does Pitt County SADD teach its students to handle these issues?

The SADD chapters in Pitt County are doing their part to educate students and parents on the dangers of social media. A group of students at South Central High School developed a presentation on Social Media Safety, and the powerpoint was shared at club meetings across the county. A detective from our local police department has talked with students at several schools, and he also spoke at a SADD parent meeting. Social media is at the core of every teenagers life.  Pitt County SADD strives to educate students on the impact that unhealthy social media choices can have now and in the future.
